Bell drinkers for chickens

Bell drinkers for chickens are made from durable plastic. They come in two form of chicken drinkers – automatic bell drinkers and normal fonts, Automatic bell drinkers allow you to supply water to many poultry drinkers at one time.

As the chickens drink the water form the bell drinker it fill automatically. A chicken farmer can add medication at source and medicate the entire flock. The way the bell drinker works is on weight – as the chicken drinkers, the bell drinker get slighter…and a valve clicks in and allows more water through. If you need to give water to many chickens then this type of poultry drinker is the answer. If you only have a few chickens then a font is probably cheaper – but needs more work.

The other system of giving water to chickens is with a nipple drinking system – this is the best of all systems – but is quite expensive – it is usually used in a poultry house that has upwards of 5000 chickens and mostly in very large chicken houses that house 40 00 chickens. Bell drinkers can be used effectively in all types of poultry farming in South Africa – organic poultry farming, free range chicken farming and intensive chicken farming in South Africa. They are good for layers (chickens raised for egg production) or broilers (chickens raised for their meat).

Day old chicks (for broiler farming) will need chick founts for the first week. Each bell drinker is fully adjustable – you can change the height of each poultry drinker to suit the age of your chickens and you can control the amount of water that flows through the chicken drinker. if you are only keeping a few chickens then both the automatic bell drinking system and the nipple drinking system will be a waste of money – you can instead use a 10 liter fount to give the chickens water. 75 – 100 birds can use a single drinker. On a nipple drinking system each nipple will serve 12 chickens. All watering systems will need work – nipple and bell drinkers are less work – but none the less you will need to keep them clean – the automatic drinkers will need a very clean source of water – if you have a borehole make sure that small stones are not being brought up and deposited into the header tank – these will block the nipples and drinkers and cause the system to leak or stop working. If your litter gets too wet it can cause disease and problems for the chickens – if you smell a very strong ammonia smell it is from wet litter – you will need to act quickly if you want healthy birds. A well run chicken house will not stink or smell bad – it may smell of chickens – but hey they are chickens – but there will be no smell that makes you want to gag and cover your nose – if it does smell that bad then there is a problem somewhere – and the chickens are likely to get sick, if they are not already sick.
